Water Conservation Tips
October 17, 2026
Outdoors and Gardening
- Water early or late: Water your lawn during the cool morning hours to reduce loss from evaporation.
- Use a broom: Sweep driveways, sidewalks, and patios with a broom instead of hosing them down.
- Wash cars with a bucket: Use a bucket of soapy water and a shut-off nozzle on the hose, or visit a commercial car wash that recycles water.
In the Bathroom
- Turn off the tap: Turn off the water while brushing your teeth, shaving, or soaping your hands to save up to 8 gallons a day.
- Shorten showers: Keep showers under 5 minutes to use 10 to 25 gallons instead of filling a tub which takes about 70 gallons.
- Fix leaky toilets: Check for silent toilet leaks using dye tablets, as a faulty flapper can waste up to 200 gallons a day.
In the Kitchen
- Run full loads: Only run the dishwasher when it is completely full, and scrape plates instead of pre-rinsing them under a running tap.
- Store cold water: Keep a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until it gets cold.
In the Laundry Room
- Load fully: Wash only full loads of laundry or adjust the machine settings to match your smaller load size.
- Choose cold water: Wash clothes using cold water to save both water and energy.
